63 Third Thought Thinking

Find this photo and over 1,000 more of my photos on Instagram: @JayMartens

Our natural response when confronted with a decision is to simply agree with what is put before us.

The second thought is to blindly disagree and reject what is presented.

The Third thought is where all creativity begins. The Third Thought is  one of "how can I make this work" not whether it will work or not, but HOW.

Third Thought Thinking engages your creativity centre in your brain and you begin to problem solve as opposed to just regurgitating reasons pro or con for the provided options of a decision.

In Improv comedy it is essential to live in the third thought - for that is where all of the punchlines to all the jokes live.

Improv example:
Free word association with the word "apple"

First thought thinkers:
iPhone, iPad, Computers, Red, Golden delicious, granny smith,

Second thought thinkers:
Orange, Banana, fruit, PC, android

Third thought thinkers:
Gravity, of my eye, archery, pineapple, apple Jacksparrow, Steve Jobs, Adam and Eve, Adam and Steve (Jobs)

14 What was your Creative Beginning?

We all start somewhere...

I started back in Jr high school when I had to make a life altering choice between band or drama...

Special shout outs to Mr. Reddifer and my old classmates: Paul, Chris and Daryl.

Other teachers that had a profound impact on my early creative journey: Jo and Gord Robideau.

If I get 1,000 comments on this video - I will post the "glove video" (a scream in the night) video that Daryl, Chris and myself created in Jr. high. (created back BEFORE there were video cameras in phones and BEFORE there was software to edit videos!)

8 Anchoring your Creative State!

Anchoring is a technique used all over the world to get peak performers into the right "headspace".

Use this simple technique to quickly "jump into the Zone" for your Creative Journey.

Steps:

  1. Relive a moment when you were at your creative peak
  2. Spend as much time as you can in that moment and visualize every aspect of that moment (sights, sounds, temperature, smells...)
  3. Use a unique physical gesture to Anchor that moment
  4. Later on use that unique physical gesture to trigger your peak creative state
  5. Keep re-visualizing creative wins in your mind and associate them to the gesture
Here is the four minute version with my own example of how I jump into my improv "happy place":

Try out anchoring for yourself and let me know how it goes in the comments.

*Note: anchoring can be used for any state you want to get into, so you can play around with it and see how it can help you!
